LAUBEGAST SHIPYARD DRESDEN

On the banks of the Elbe in Dresden, Barcode Architects are designing an eye-catching, multifunctional pavilion that will breathe new life into the 120-year-old Laubegast shipyard site. Integrated greenery and high-quality architecture make the new Schiffswerft Laubegast a warm place for relaxation and work, and a revaluation of a historic location in Dresden. Schiffswerft Laubegast has a low volume that runs along the entire west side of the historic shipyard. The horizontal character of the building, the warm materialization and integration of greenery give a building a special identity and at the same time ensure that the building blends into its environment. With the design, Barcode Architects has opted for a pavilion with an inviting identity, a floor plan that is as open as possible with a central organization and a mixed program that can be flexibly arranged.

Schiffswerft Laubegast has a low volume that runs along the entire west side of the historic shipyard. The horizontal character of the building, the warm materialization and integration of greenery give a building a special identity and at the same time ensure that the building blends into its environment. Towards the waterfront, the wooden structure is lifted from the descending landscape, allowing the volume to extend an additional 27 meters towards the Elbe.
With the design, Barcode Architects has opted for a pavilion with an inviting identity, a floor plan that is as open as possible with a central organization and a mixed program that can be flexibly arranged. The first floor houses are high-end office space. On the ground floor are workshops for creative enterprises, a showroom space and a combined lobby with a conference room and restaurant, offering visitors and local residents a pleasant place to gather.

Dirk Peters, partner:
“We designed Schiffswerft Laubegast above all with respect for the local, flat nature. The expansive roofscape on top of the building is one of the most prominent elements of the nature-inclusive concept. By adding 1,000m2 of landscape, we give back the greenery to the surroundings of the Elbe bank. The lush roof garden provides a healthy environment for relaxation and spectacular views over the Elbe Valley and the shipyard.”

Sightlines are maintained as much as possible with transparent glass walls and stairwells integrated in round concrete columns, which give the interior a friendly layer. Red semi-transparent curtains provide warmth to the interior and allow the larger spaces to be easily divided into smaller rooms, without obstructing the long sightlines and the transparent nature of the design. The all-sided glass facade of the pavilion creates bright, pleasant areas throughout the building with a direct view of the surrounding nature. Schiffswerft Laubegast has a two-layer, demountable wooden construction, which gives the design a long life. The ceilings of the above-ground floors are made of cross-laminated timber (CLT) elements. The beams cantilever outside the facade axes, which creates continuous balconies around the building. The chosen structure is largely constructed with prefab elements, which significantly reduces construction time and costs and significantly reduces emissions on the construction site. The characteristic wooden portals refer to the building method of the ship structures and provide the building with a powerful and at the same time warm appearance.

In addition to the prominent green roof, the energy-neutral building performance also characterizes the highly sustainable design. The climate concept with external sun protection on the south, west and east facades ensures a consistently pleasant indoor climate. 1,000m2 of solar panels contribute to the energy system and guarantee an energy-neutral building.
