Alter Schlachthof Dresden

The Alter Schlachthofareal is uniquely located in the city of Dresden close to the Elbe river. In our masterplan for the area, we chose to highlight the historical industrial character of the old meatpacking district by increasing the public space around these buildings. This way, the interaction with the cultural heritage is strengthened, resulting in a dynamic area for living, working and recreation.

The design focuses on the development of the Schlachthofareal to an attractive urban area with a large diversity in program. The central strip houses public functions such as a market hall, a theatre, shops, art galleries, bars, and restaurants. Surrounding this public domain are multifunctional buildings with offices and housing for different target groups. By mixing these different functions we create a space that is pleasant to stay in at all times, from early in the morning until late at night. A new destination for the city of Dresden.
