Building 1 belongs to the entire campus and contains functions that are accessible to the entire Fontys community, such as the library, auditorium, and restaurant. The building is oriented to towards the heart of the campus. Together with the existing building R10, the new building forms an entrance gate towards the campus. The building is visible from all points on campus and highlights the open and transparent identity of Fontys.

Building 1 is characterised by a strong contrast between the north and west façades that relate to the campus square, and the east and south facades behind which a large part of the ‘closed’ program is located. This contrast is enhanced by the materialisation of the two facades: a completely transparent façade that allows maximum interaction with the campus square and the user spaces and an almost completely closed façade that reflects the landscape.
